OPEN MIC INTERVIEW: Frankie Drain

At The Southampton Stable, we like to support our local artists and have live music as often as we can.

Monday night is Open Mic Night, and we have different hosts each week!

One of our regulars is Frankie, who amazes us each time with incredible vocals and a good dash of humour. We were cheeky enough to ask him a few questions…

Tell us about yourself –
My name is Frankie Drain, I’m 27 years old and I live in Southampton. I play guitar, bass, cajon and sing. I’m currently learning drums and clarinet, I started playing guitar when I was 13.

What kind of music do you play?
I play solo acoustic covers/loop sets, I also play cajon in an acoustic duo and electric guitar in an ambient electro pop-rock collective for a Southampton artist called WREN.

Who are your favourite artists?
Say Anything were the first band that I really fell for – an odd take on punk rock with some incredible lyricism! Then it’s gotta be Bon Iver – Justin Vernon’s melodies and lyrics are very moving and I love that they continue to push boundaries as a band that I couldn’t ever even fathom! Truly blissful stuff, and the new album is incredible! Then, last but not least, Pinegrove – my little brother and I have matching Pinegrove tattoos! I have seen them live three times and find their country/emo/rock mixture very interesting and, again, a very lyrically captivating band!

What is your favourite pizza?
Margherita every time! Keep it simple, less is more where pizza is concerned if you ask me!

What is your favourite cider?
I think it’s called Number 8, it’s a Rhubarb cider, it’s f*?$ing delicious!!!

(YES FRANKIE, IT’S CRAFTY NECTAR No. 8 – IT’S IN OUR CIDER AWARDS AND TASTES FANTASTIC!)

What do you love about The Stable Open Mics?
I love all open mics really! The talent, the community, the good vibes, all the lovely people and the variety of music and tastes. I think they’re all very important staples in the local music community.

(WE DO TOO! WE WELCOME ALL TALENTS, STANDARDS,  AND ALL GENRES! EVERY WEEK IS EXCITING!)

What is your favourite gig you’ve ever done?
Ahhhh! Again, so hard to pick one! I’ve been very blessed to share such talented circles of friends that all amaze me, there have been so many amazing shows! Me and WREN and co. sold out Heartbreakers for our first headline show last month, so that felt pretty special and we all had a blast! Our keys player, Sarah printed all of our merch by hand the night before!

Fun fact about yourself –
I’m Type 1 Diabetic, have had it since I was two years old! When it happened I was the youngest in West Sussex – I was the newspaper and everything…!

We said FUN fact, Frankie….

Come down to The Stable from 7.30pm on the first Monday of every month to catch Frankie’s diverse open mics! We run one every week with other hosts too though if you’re about 😉

Every performer gets a free pint!

We have drinks deals through our APP too!
